How to perform WordPress snapshot backup

WordPress snapshot backup should be performed before you make any major changes to your WordPress website. This is especially true if you are about to upgrade your WordPress version, update any plugin or theme versions. While most of the time one can assume the upgrade will go well, in the unlikely event that it does not, your WordPress backup will save the day!

The Manual Way

WordPress backup can be done manually through the following highly simplified steps:

  1. Connect to your WordPress website via FTP
  2. Duplicate the entire WordPress website folder
  3. Connect to your MySQL database / phpMyAdmin
  4. Locate your WordPress database, export a copy of the database to your computer

Through cPanel

  1. Login to cPanel
  2. Click on File Manager
  3. Locate your WordPress website folder, right-click on it and click Copy
  4. Give it an identifiable name and click Copy Files
  5. Return to cPanel Home
  6. Click on Backup
  7. Identify your WordPress MySQL database, click on it
  8. cPanel should export your MySQL database and allow you to download it in .gz file format
